MU is the flagship of the University of Missouri system and the only public AAU Doctoral/Research Extensive institution in Missouri. A great strength at MU is the extent of interdisciplinary research fueled by the virtual absence of departmental boundaries and barriers. The Schools of Medicine and Natural Resources, and the Colleges of Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources; Engineering; and Veterinary Medicine are located within a five-minute walk of the Division of Biological Sciences. All our students have easy access to all of our faculty as well as faculty in the departments of Agronomy, Animal Science, and Biochemistry (College of Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources); Medicine, Microbiology, Pharmacology, and Physiology (School of Medicine); Electrical/Computer Engineering (College of Engineering); and Chemistry and Physics (College of Arts & Science). Many of our faculty and students are engaged in collaborative projects with faculty and students in these departments.

All research laboratories are connected to the Internet and have library, journal and reference access. MU is also activley participating in Internet 2 development. We have a new 15,000-sq. ft. greenhouse with transgenic laboratory and growth facilities. All our animal facilities are AAALAC accredited. The University and Medical School libraries are within a five-minute walk of our research laboratories.
